Implementing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Strategy – Learnings for Oil Spill Industry Development
DescriptionOil Spill Response Ltd is an industry owned spill response organisation that is committed to embracing diversity, equitable practices and inclusive behaviours.

As members of the oil and gas industry we face an opportunity at a pivotal moment in time, when the rate of change is accelerating in a Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity (VUCA) orientated world. We are presented with the potential to make a positive difference to our abilities to deliver on the energy transition missions through the work of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI). A visible commitment to DEI is increasingly likely to strengthen global image and the licence to operate, with increased focus upon a company’s purpose and values. McKinsey acknowledge in their 2021 Diversity Wins, How Inclusion Matters Report, that as companies emerge from the COVID-19 crisis, DEI is an essential enabler of recovery, resilience and reimagination, not least because its existence is a pre-requisite for attracting the future workforce.

This paper explores the case for change in the oil spill response industry and shares the learnings from our journey as we work towards embedding DEI into the fabric of our operations. It considers the adoption of a ‘data led outcome focused strategy’ for DEI and highlights the practicalities of implementation that require us to evolve courageously and curiously together for the continued development of the oil spill response industry. This paper will explore the approach we have taken and the learnings we have found in:
• Positioning the case for change through DEI in spill response and the wider oil and gas community
• Developing and implementing a DEI strategy scaled for suitability in size and industry
• Approach to initiative design and implementation
• The challenges in implementing DEI and sharing ways in which these have been addressed / overcome
