Into the Wild – From the Pacific Ocean to the Mojave Desert and from Rattlesnakes to Sea Otters – Wildlife Response in Diverse Settings
SessionWildlife - Case Studies
DescriptionThe Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN) and the California Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR) are mandated to provide best achievable capture and care for oiled wildlife throughout California covering ocean, lake, river, and stream settings from the redwood forests to the Sierra Nevada mountains. This presentation will use case studies and lessons learned to explore the different needs for wildlife response in inland versus marine oil spills, and between accessible and remote spill locations to share effective practices and preparations for successful response. Topics will include expectations for differing taxa in differing habitats, relevant hazing, capture and care techniques, and scalability tips based on the response setting and needs.
