Industry Collaboration Supporting an Effective Wildlife Response During an Oil Spill Incident
DescriptionAlthough oil spills and the subsequent impact to wildlife has continued to decline over recent decades in Australia, the potential remains through activities of shipping and oil and gas exploration and production. To ensure response readiness across jurisdictions within this declining risk setting, there has been an increased interest in collaborative engagement across state and federal jurisdictions. This has the potential to reduce the effort required for each individual jurisdiction and increase the overall potential for response success should an incident occur.
A model of collaboration between responsible agencies and supporting bodies across State and Federal jurisdictions in Australia is providing much needed assurance that an oiled wildlife incident is able to be managed if necessary. The collaboration extends across private industry, government agencies, regulatory authorities and independent wildlife response specialists. The model encompasses improved contingency planning, equipment and personnel resourcing, training and exercising.
The challenge is to identify the collective need across the potential spill risks and overcome the constraints of geographical isolation, limited infrastructure and oiled wildlife specialists within an environment of reducing spill incidents.
This paper provides an outline of the proposed process of Oiled Wildlife Response support in order to ensure the consistency of response across Australian jurisdictions.
