Response to LSFO spills - results from the IMAROS-project
DescriptionMarine Low Sulphur Fuel Oils (LSFOs) may be challenging during accidental spills as their behavior at sea is not well known. All though observations from a few spills and recent research have added to our knowledge, experience is still limited. In the EU-co-funded project IMAROS (Improving response capacities and understanding the environmental impacts of new generation low sulphur MARine fuel Oil Spills) several aspects of oil spill response and environmental impacts from LSFO spills were investigated.
Physico-chemical properties of the oils were analyzed, and the samples revealed a very wide range in their properties. Ignitability, application of dispersants and efficiency of high pressure washing on rock tiles were tested in the laboratory. In addition, oil weathering was tested in meso-scale flume tank experiments. These results provided insights in the weathering behavior of the oils, but they were also used to evaluate existing modelling approaches. Efficiency of mechanical recovery was tested in sea water basins in test facilities in France and Norway.
Results from the project will be presented, with emphasis on challenges for oil spill response and observations from the testing of mechanical recovery.
