Two Practical Clean-Up Applications of Oil Sequestering Magnetic Particles
DescriptionThe appropriate application of oil-sequestering magnetic particle technology (MPT) to oil spills and the consequences thereof (so-called "magnetic cleansing") is a dry cleansing approach that offers a number of advantages over conventional methods of oil clean up, such as those that employ dispersants or detergents. Such advantages include the portability of the technology and the high level of control over waste disposal. We have developed and describe here, two such applications. One of these provides a "quick clean" to oil contaminated animals whereby the more toxic and/or corrosive contaminants are removed upon first encounter, in a matter of minutes - and this may be incorporated into existing stabilization procedures for the rescue and rehabilitation of contaminated wildlife. This method could be particularly useful when large numbers of affected animal are awaiting treatment and where fumes from the aforementioned components may present significant health risks to the rehabilitators themselves. It is anticipated that a wide implementation of this technique could result in greatly improved survival rates for contaminated wildlife. The second application of this technology involves the development of a "magnetic sweeper" that is designed to magnetically harvest small oil spills on workshop/factory floors and other surfaces such as roads and runways. This technology results in a rapid clean-up and a very high level of control over waste disposal with minimal environmental impact.
