Advantages to Industry of Comprehensive Tier 3 Oiled Wildlife Preparedness and Assessment: The Global Oiled Wildlife Response Service
SessionMeet the Poster Authors
DescriptionWhile the concept of an international collaboration of oiled wildlife response organizations has existed in different formats for decades, the most recent inspiration for a formal collaboration, the Global Oiled Wildlife Response System (GOWRS) Project, was conceptualized during the Interspill conference in 2012.
Since then, this group of wildlife ecology, response and animal welfare organisations, funded via the Oil Spill Response Joint Industry Project (OSR-JIP) beginning in 2015 and by Oil Spill Response Ltd. (OSRL) since 2017, have been collaborating to develop the infrastructure for a global system for oiled wildlife response - one informed by international best practice - through establishing standards and structures that aim to improve international cooperation on oiled wildlife preparedness.
Important lessons have been learned as to what is necessary to provide assured Tier 3 oiled wildlife response services globally, as well as the local/regional preparedness requirements to ensure effective response. This effort has resulted in GOWRS now providing an assessment service through OSRL, but also offers other services for industry in the form of consultancies.
This poster will fully illustrate the distinct advantages of developing local/regional preparedness, through collaborative working to ensure effective response. The poster will also illustrate the valuable role that a complete oiled wildlife assessment can have at the start of a Tier 3 event, including those activities that must subsequently occur for success, the benefits to industry that can be realized in its deployment, and will use the GOWRS-led assessment service as an example of a professionally-led assessment effort.
