A New Era of Wildlife Hazing & Deterrence: What Do We Know and How Do We Improve?
SessionMeet the Poster Authors
DescriptionHazing & deterrence is a secondary response tool and an important component of oiled wildlife response that is aimed at scaring or deterring/excluding animals from the oil and preventing them from becoming impacted. Although hazing and deterrence techniques have been widely used throughout the world for a variety of species, situations, and habitats, many of the lessons learned and effectiveness of the different techniques/situations/species are not widely disseminated. As a result, overall forward progress in this field has been limited. The Oiled Wildlife Care Network (OWCN), in coordination with Aiuká (Brazil) and California Department of Fish & Wildlife, Office of Spill Prevention and Response (CDFW/OSPR), sponsored the first ever Wildlife Hazing & Deterrence Summit at the University of California, Davis campus in October 2023. The goal of this event was to bring together subject matter experts from around the world to share their knowledge on this specialized topic and to further advance this important tool as it applies to oiled wildlife response. In this poster I will present several interesting results, lessons learned, and future research on this topic, as well as recommendations on future efforts to further its applicability during spill events.
