Oil Spill Detection and Measurement Sensor Testbed Using UV Fluorescence
DescriptionA small unmanned aerial system (sUAS) based sensor testbed has been
developed to detect and characterize oil or fuel spills and is undergoing
field trials It uses the property that long-chain hydrocarbons fluoresce
when exposed to UV light. It operates in near darkness, illuminating the
area under the aircraft and measuring the degree of fluorescence. Fully
self-contained, and weighing under 2kg, it can be flown on missions up
to 50 minutes at a typical operating altitude of 30m. The sensor package
consists of a sensitive imaging system controlled by a single-board computer,
with additional GPS and altimeter sensors, on-board data storage, and UV
lighting. The system is constructed from commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)
parts, with some custom 3D-printed parts for mounting. Post-mission processing
software has been developed that removes ambient background lighting to
improve the signal-to-clutter ratio {SCR}, and allows the user to select
from a variety of detection methods, including Cell-Averaging Constant False
Alarm Rate (CA-CFAR), Pearson’s Correlation Coefficient, and the Kullback-Leibler
Divergence. The testbed software allows for full control of the sensor via WiFi
before and during missions, as well as having full diagnostic outputs to aid in
system debugging and integration. Once detected and characterized, the mission
data are presented to the user as a geographic map with markers indicating
location and quantity of detected material.
