International collaborative efforts towards preparedness by simulating the drift of marine pollutants during shipwrecks – case studies.
DescriptionCollaborative efforts in modeling and validating the drift of marine pollutants, such as oil spills and plastic debris, are crucial for understanding their behavior in the marine environment and devising effective mitigation strategies. Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) engages in issuing oil spill advisories since 2014. It has an operational oil spill advisory system, which includes an integrated set up of oil spill trajectory model, General ocean circulation models, atmospheric models and Geographical Information System (GIS).
In-addition to oil spills reported along Indian Coast, we also advised the government of neighbor countries during the event of shipwrecks and oil spills. Certain countries include, Srilanka, Mauritius and Maldives. During the wrecks of MV Wakashio (2020), MT New Diamond (2020) and MVX_Press pearl (2021), Collaborative efforts were made between INCOIS and other governments towards the preparedness. Oil and nurdles drift patterns were simulated using our operational system and the drift patterns were sent to the concerned for planning the response operations.
