The Wreck of the Kobayashi Maru: A Wildlife Assessment Simulation
DescriptionA spill response that involves oiled wildlife can feel like an unwinnable challenge: a Kobayashi Maru scenario. In this session, a panel of experts will lead the audience in an engaging simulation of a fictitious Tier 3 incident that demonstrates how specialist assessment built upon good preparedness can expedite that first feel-good news story of clean and healthy animals being released.
There have been incidents where the complexities of wildlife response were not properly considered, leading to challenges with planning, operations, and public relations. Effective wildlife response starts with a well-tested and actionable contingency plan prepared well in advance of the day the hotline rings. Further, the players must practice together so everyone knows their role ahead of the day they are needed. Lastly, mobilizing the right expertise at the critical moment to assess the four key dynamics (incident management, spill-specific challenges, field operations, and rehabilitation) which are crucial to the delivery of an effective response.
This simulation will demonstrate how having the correct building blocks in place will create a tool kit to address perceived challenges and to ultimately deliver an effective wildlife response.
