Biography
Commander Nick Monacelli currently serves as the Ninth District Senior Reserve Attorney in Cleveland, Ohio, directly responsible to the Staff Judge Advocate for training and maintaining a capable, nation-wide deployable team of legal experts while supporting the District’s ongoing operational missions.
Commander Monacelli’s legal experience includes expansive Staff Judge Advocate and military justice duties in the Ninth & Eleventh Districts, and the Coast Guard’s enterprise-wide Legal Service Command. With broad operational experience in the First, Seventh, Eighth, Ninth, Eleventh, and Fourteenth Districts in Aids to Navigation, Domestic Ice Breaking, International Fisheries Enforcement, Search & Rescue, and Alien & Migrant Interdiction Operations, he has served in several cutters around the globe, including as Commanding Officer of the ice breaking buoy tender HOLLYHOCK (WLB 214) in Port Huron, Michigan.
Commander Monacelli graduated and commissioned with high honors from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with a B.S., and a follow-on M.E. from Old Dominion University, in Electrical Engineering. He took a Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, and is a member of the California, Michigan, and Nevada Bars. In 2018, he graduated at the top of his class at the U.S. Naval War College with a M.A. in Defense and Strategic Studies. He has published numerous scholarly articles in prestigious domestic and international outlets, including Oxford University and the National University of Singapore flagship journals, on wide ranging topics including fisheries enforcement, US-China relations, electronic navigation, maritime environmental governance, US Coast Guard policy, and various Law of the Sea treaty concerns.
Commander Monacelli, his wife Brittany, and their three children Owen, Jack, and Emmalyn, reside in Las Vegas, Nevada. Commander Monacelli’s hobbies include golf, diving, woodworking, and traveling. In his civilian capacity, Commander Monacelli serves as General Counsel for an ultra-high-net-worth single-family office.
